200tdi "Tapping" Engine

Hello all. Grateful for any advice on my 1985 90 (200tdi) that I just got back from having a new chassis, general 'tidy up' and new Timing Belt. Took it out for a run and it suddenly started an increasingly loud "Tap,Tap" clattering through the rev range. No oil or water loss but white smoke out the exhaust. Has the timing belt slipped or not been set up right at the garage, and,if it hasn't broken would it create knock-on damage to pushrods/valves, because the noise is terrible from the top of the engine.! Grateful for views and advice, and, if it has damaged rods etc is it a new Turner Head option?

the 200 tdi are quite noisy anyway, did you notice any knocks or rattles when you picked it up after the belt change, if not it points to something has slipped i would sugest you check the timing before you travel anywhere in it, also could it be your vacume pump? it may well be worth removing your rocker cover to see if any pushrods have come adrift. al very simple to check. ron,

Thanks Ron. No, there were no hints of anything for the first ten miles or so, then it just started clattering. I'm not a confident DIY mechanic, so it's going to have to be recovered to RCV landrovers. If I get them to check timing first and that belt intact, and hopefully no damage been done to pushrods, then hopefully that might be the answer. What part does the vacuum pump play in that area? the vacume pump only plays a part as reguards brakes its down the left hand side of the engine(looking in from the front)just next to the fuel lift pump, i had a very noisy one on our 300 disco, made a heck of a clatter , changed it and solved the problem,if you are getting white smoke from exhaust its very likely pump timing slipped, put in a pm to james martin he will probably have a better idea as to what it could be, hope you get it sorted soon.. ron.

My pulley snapped and my timing must have jumped a fair few teeth and I (stupidly) drove it to my dads (hes a mechanic) and once a new pulley and belt was fitted it ran fine. In my defence I didn't know it was the timing when I drove it to his Also mines a 300tdi, but they are very similar.

So basically I'm only posting this to say, yes don't drive it if you think its jumped some teeth, however your pushrods should be ok - So you shouldn't have to worry about them.

Update as follows: and it was the worst it could get. "The big ends gone, I'm afraid" the technician said with genuine pity! So, its back to the drawing board for me, and if I ever want to enjoy this old landy that I have invested in,then I need to save more pennies and source out another engine.

Break the old engine and get some money back, head, injectors and pump and turbo all have a value.
Even the timing chest covers and crank pulley, i spent ages looking for a front crank pulley.
