my 200tdi defender always ran with the temp gauge just below halfway.after a full service, cambelt change, new radiator and water pump the temp gauge now reads over half, and when working hard will go to 3/4.

we have changed the water pump and radiator again, to rule out possible faults with these, and replaced the thermostat several times.

has anyone had a similar experiance ? what temp does your 200tdi run at?

my 200 TDi runs normally just over half and goes up to 3/4 when working hard.
I'm running without a fan though - are you?
Could be that your viscous fan is furbar.
Within reason, the hotter a doozel engine runs, the more efficient it is, so I don't worry.

thanks guys...........

have drained and refilled the system several times, and pretty sure no air in the system.

we are running the viscous fan and presume its working ok(how do you check?).
the reason we are a little worried is we are due to leave for Cape Town in August. seeing as we have replace old parts for new,we are a bit surprised the engine is running hotter.

Do you have the correct temp sender fitted?
And is it actually running warmer than before.
I had this problem and even with the Land rover computer prescribed temp sender (orange one) it was still wrong.
I fitted a green sender to see if it made any difference and the temp gauge is now spot on.
I checked at every stage with a lazer temp checker thingy and it was defo the sender that was wrong as the temp in the block and hoses and rad was as it should be.
I dont have a fan either btw, dont need one even when towing.

Almost exactly the same here.... new belt, pump (paddocks) and service and my 110 went from always being bang on halfway to three quarters on the guage.

Everything otherwise OK - laser thermometer says the top hose conection is around 80 deg and the radiator shows a normal heat drop to the return hose.

I am baffled as to why except to suspect that the new pump does not pump as effectively as the factory original and so the water is getting hotter.

Oddly the interior heater is also not as hot as it was either, previously it was super hot and now its just hottish.
