Hi
Picked up my wheels after having lots of work done couple of days ago- galv chassis, new suspension, bushes etc etc. I also had the engine rebuilt while everything was nice and accessible. Unfortunately none of this was done locally. On my way up to get the work done it had blown 6 litres of oil out of the dipsyick tube- 250 miles! Engineer diagnosed bust rings and says same were replaced x4 along with new pistons for good measure. Cylinder head was overhauled aswell.

On my journey home I was taking it easy and checking oil frequently. No oil used by the time I got home but checking under the bonnet, the oil filler cap was a little smokey. Had an experienced LR mechanic take a look and says no way should it be smoking or blowing from oil filler cap. No oil was spilling but was a bit drafty.

So now he has me worried! He also sowed the seed of doubt by saying just because the engine guy said new pistons etc, how do you know the work was actually done? What a fecker! Pointed out scams like this are rife in Ireland. I tried to sound convincing by suggesting maybe rings are bedding in.

So, smokey rocker cover, no oil use, no smokey exhaust (previously bollowing!) and engine running great (always was). Should I be worried (or wanting engineers head on a block)?

so its got crank case comprestion ....when the engine is running and you remove the oil filler cap you will get a "wind" and smoke ...you will get this with all engines ....its normal if it isnt running poor isnt useing oil isnt useing coolant and isnt drinking fuel i wouldnt worry ....!

not entirely true tdis shouldnt breathe heavy ,if it was rebored ,cross hatch honed poorly ,rings not gapped hence breaking in first place ,theres more to fitting pistons than some realise,i would get someone who knows to look at it

i would only be worried as first time rings broke this doesnt happen if built properly ,yes we can all leave a bolt loose etc

Did you get a warrenty?
Are the engineers approachable? talk to them after a few miles and see what happens. I guess you did some homework in to the people that did the work so chill out and if the worst happens well.......................calmly put some steel toe cap boots on, pretend your O`gara at Croke Park and only 2 points down agaisnt England and his bollocks are there, then get them to repair the damage
EASY

Thanks for the reassurance. One other thing that got me was that he said the bores were fine and only needed honing. It dawned on me (after the fact) that I recall reading that stock pistons are no longer available and a rebore is needed for the available oversized ones.

If this is true, either he did a rebore (unlikley) or he didn't fit new pistons...hmmm.

Finally, people talk about the breather pipe being blocked would cause smokey rocker cover- gauze mentioned. Is this worth a check?

Does this mean you drove it over 250 miles back, only if you did I would have thought if it wasn't done right it would have started to show more problems than you discribe on the journey home........

Might it take a while for the rings to 'bed in' so to speak? Just a guess, it may get better with time and a few more miles under its belt.

In any case, I would register the problem with the garage who did the work ASAP, explain it to them and see what they say. If it gets worse then you can go back to them and have them correct the problem.
