Hi took my disco to its 1st pay and play since I have owned it. I now have 2 lamps full of water, is there anyway I can seal my lamps for future playing?????

I used silicone around the rubber but it makes things a pain to change the bulbs. I eventually fitted two pieces of plastic over the access holes in the slam panel. Assuming you are not actually submerging your headlights then the water drops from the slam panel on to them from above and seeps inside.

Dave

It is possible to upgrade the front of your 200 to a 300 spec which I think are sealed units, this would include some metal work for the lamp mounts and you can use the later indicators as well.

When sourceing parts you will need some lamp trims and grill, I hope that helps?

I am unsure about using the range rover units,

Dave

Hi Geoff 30, the 300 series lamps are not sealed as they have replacable bulbs.

It is possible to replace lamps I have seen it done a few times, I don't know was is involved but i would suspect not a lot and i think the grill stays but remember it's not just the lamps but their mounting kit also..

So go for it.

Hi Geoff, truthfully there isn't a successful way of waterproofing your headlights.

You can try silicone seal on the rubber seal at the back but as said previously it'll make more problems than it solves.

Is it just that you don't like the idea of water in the headlights or is somethng else going on?

I would just take 'em off and empty them, when you've finished your off-road plytime. Only takes a few mins.

Cheers
Dave

To be honest it is just the fact they are now full of dirt where the water has settled.
Do the 200 lamps come apart so I can clean the reflectors?

No, the glass is sealed to the reflector, so remove the lamp and hold under a tap although your headlamp reflectors aren't going to last very long and will discolor and the silver will start to peel away.

This sounds like something I need to tinker with, there must be a way to reduce this problem.

I have seen some of the pics in the gallery, there a disco with the TD5 lamps grafted on, looks like a good conversion.

Ouch that is big big money!!!!!
Think will just try and find a way to reduce the water going into the standard units.
Dont want to be paying that much each time I crack a light.

Hi Geoff, just for your info, std Disco headlights are about £27+vat a piece from these people:

STC1233 Headlamp RH - RHD from MA081992

Any headlight that has replacable bulbs will have the same problem.

Cheers
Dave

Have been thinking about the silicon at the back of the light where the bulbs go in. Might combine this idea with the plastic over the openings and see what I come up with.
My bulbs should not require changing all that often ??????????????? I HOPE !!!!!!!!

Geoff, if you try to seal the lamp units as you say they will mist up with condensation as a result of the reaction of heat and cold glass, there is a need to vent them. The rubber seal surrounding the the bulb connections has a vent hole at the bottom of it for that reason.

The headlights on my disco have a small (1/4") hole drilled into the top of the rear of the light and a 6-8" length of clear hose siliconed into the hole to allow water vapour to vent.

I know this sounds mongy but i wrapped mine in a plastic bag cable tied them took ten mins and then plunged in, i had NO water or owt in the light ( it had happened before) then after it was a case of just cutting them off. the only bad bit was i ran out of dog poo bags and had to do the oh i didne see that one pop out!! trick.
That being said it didnt stop the carpets getting wet!!!!!:D

I know BUT!!! There was no water in them! it looked absolutly ridiculous and a guy in a Jap ****e pajumbo was tekin the pizz but as soon as i took em off there was no water & mud, it was in my old 200tdi and we did have to wade far to deep, we'd done it a week before and i had to remove both headlights and dry them in the drying room in Brecon next to my socks!!
This was the only thing i could think of, are the tablets small n blue???:D
