Hi guys, been having a bit of a nightmare recently. Firstly my turbo went a few weeks ago so bought and fitted a replacement, started the car up had it running for about half an hour then it just died. Took the rocker cover off to have a look and nothing moved when i turned it over, so took the rocker shaft off and found two bent push rods. I've since stripped it to reveal a snapped cambelt which I assumed anyway. The problem I've got is the camshaft pulley seems to be stuck solid. Fuel pump pulley and crankshaft both spin. Anybody got any suggestions on what's causing this? Could a broken follower have jammed the cam? And how do I go about checking the camshaft, is it a head off job? Any help appreciated.

The cam should turn freely with belt off ! It's possible you may have a damaged camshaft !! Head off will reveal followers and maybe one has broken ! You should be able to get the follower out with head off !!

Thanks for the replies. Taken the head now. Had two bent pushrods but all the valves seem ok and I've taken all the followers and slides out and they are all fine. Think I'm goin to take the vac pump off and see if the cam will turn without the skew gear, am I likely to experience timing issue s if I start turning the cam without yhe skew gear in place?

A lot of people, and some manuals, tell you the skew gear has to be timed. This is because on a petrol engine it drives the distributor, so theres no need to worry on a Tdi.

Yeah thinking about it its only driving a pump so I guess it would be ok. I just cant think what else would jam the cam .
