200tdi, 90 - Making a Oil Temperature Monitoring System

Hi All,

After some advice and help, I am making up a temperature monitoring system that in the cab displays the temp of the Engine Oil, Transfer Box Oil and Gear Box Oil. Being in the electric industry I am fine on the electric side but need help on what temperature sensor I should use and mainly where can I install them on each component.

Any help and advice on this would be much appreciated.

Also, can anyone tell me what the rough normal operating temperature should I have for the Engine Oil, Transfer Box Oil and Gear Box Oil.

I'm no expert but i would think you want to monitor oil temp in the respective sumps, could you modify the sump plug to incorporate a sensor?

I don’t know, but sure the LT230 has a temp switch, probably not variable also the R380 has similar so those points could be used.
Temps are probably in a manual somewhere, and pretty sure you could get a LR temp sensor (variable) to get readings.
Plenty of aftermarket temp sensors around 1 type would cover the whole range at a guess.
200 tdi can’t help

I have seen some Australian temperature sensors that do engine and gearbox. They use a temperature sensor that is fitted using one of the bolts (like a washer) so it measures the temperature of the block/casing. I would like one of these as it actually monitors the engine temperature rather than coolant, as the 300tdi can loose water flow if it looses coolant due to the water pump being at the top of the engine. However, these sensors could be fitted wherever there is a suitable bolt, which may be far simpler for what you need.

I don't understand electrical stuff so you may be able to figure out if any of the above can give any ideas for what you want to do.

I have not tried any of the above so please don't think this is an endorsement of any kind.

I'm using a single gauge & 3 sensors (on my Mx5 toy) to view engine / gearbox & diff oil temps, used a rotary switch to scroll through sensors...

spent too much on ebay as a new but 1/2 price gauge so I've a Stack steppermotor gauge

operates by turning the switch and theres a 'dead' position between each sensor to allow the gauge to reset then show the new reading

shitty vid as was holding phone (camera) and trying to turn the switch
