I just joined up today and thisis my first post so be gentle.
I test drove a 2009 hi cap pickup on Saturday and am going back to look at it tomorrow on a ramp.

Other than the chassis and bulkhead is there anything else that I need to be on the lookout for its done around the 56k mark and it's priced at £10k any advice would be greatly appreciated as this will be my first defender. It's going to be used for my tree surgery business for carrying logs and towing chippers and trailers.

Thanks in advance
Baz

Do you have any LR owning friends that could come with you?

Otherwise, you're right to list bhead and chassis first. If you can get your head around how the suspension and steering actually work, you'll see which bits to lever in which direction. You have more ball joints than most cars, and the swivel bearings may be new to you. Transmission-wise you have twice as many bits to wear out, and the play is a bit cumulative in that several small bits can add up to a lot. The result is that you may think that it's all horribly worn, but actually it may actually be fine and it just need an eye kept on all the bits, replacing the worst ones as wear develops. Brakes, engine and electrics are much like any car. Bodywork, just look for rust in the steel bits (doors, reinforcement of rear tub, bonnet and the various brackets) alu bits should all be fine.

Good luck!

Rust, leaky roof, uncomfortable driving position, useless heater... just some of the features most tratterers desire. ;)

Being a low mileage puma version I don't think there should be too much to worry about! Just rust general leaks and the obvious really

Hi folks,

Well I'm the landy owning friend & I can report that it looks an honest stock work truck with no major issues as far as I can tell (it was in a locked yard when I saw it so no chance to test it on the road). It's been used, so as you'd expect it's got a few scratches and some dings (one headlights been siliconed back in place!) but no major issues other than some light (to medium in places) surface rust on the chassis, where judging by the mud still stuck to it, it maybe didn't get cleaned as often as it should've...

As you can see from my profile and previous posts I'm only learning myself & most of that's come by keeping my 2nd landy, a 300tdi on the road! I'm a huge fan of the tdi's and earlier so my worry is that I might not being giving my mate the best advice since I can't see any major benefit of paying 10k for the tdci over an older and cheaper td5 or tdi since you can do any repairs with the money saved...

Obviously if they've not been looked after, a 15/20 year old chassis will be far worse condition but there are some clean examples out there for £4-6k so my question is, is it worth the extra to buy nearly new but with the fairly certain knowledge that there will be things to fix since its a landy or spend half the price on a decent tdi or td5 knowing you will need to work on it but having a wedge of cash to do it with?

Haha, fair play, how about a more simple question then - if they were all of equal condition is a tdci much better than a td5 or 300tdi to use and maintain or are they all much the same?

I'd say that they're for different types of owner really. It'll cost a little more to run the older cars through fuel economy, but that's offset by their need for possibly more expensive workshops with electronic capability. If they want to visit city centres in the foreseeable future the tdci may be the only way, but an injector replacement in an African desert won't hobble a 300tdi. My gut feeling is that if they can afford it they should buy newest, but if they think that fixing it themselves could be fun then who are we to warn that madness lies in that direction?

Haha, cheers that's much of what I thought -only being a daft arse I tend towards the madness of fixing as much as I can myself & trying to convince myself it's fun
