Hi, I understand by reading various sites this is a common problem. My ignition key only turns a few degrees then jams as though the steering lock is engaged which it is not. I have been keeping it operational with regular greasing but it definitely needs replacing. I understand the whole steering lock assembly needs replacing. I have read how others have managed to remove the sheer bolts on the clamp by drilling, chiselling, punching etc and have even found detailed notes from the workshop manual about how to perform the task on a 300TDi but these are not relevant to my 2.4 TDCi.
I have removed the top and bottom plastic covers from the steering column as well as the plastic strip below the gauges but this does not provide enough room to work on the bolts. I am wondering what the professionals would do?.
It is not possible to drill the bolts from below as the moulding and fuse box is in the way. It is hardly feasible to remove the moulding as it extends the whole way across the vehicle. I am coming to the conclusion that the way to go is to remove the whole of the steering column which would massively simplify the job. However it might not be simple to remove the steering column. I can see at the top of the column (above the steering lock) it is bolted to the vehicle with a single bolt but how is it fastened at the other end?.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike
