Hi All

Recently had the N/S front driveshaft changed and now have a noticeable vibration up to about 30mph. I'm a little concerned this could cause other damage.

Thoughts, advice, experienced greatly appreciated as always.

Thanks

Some questions to help us help you!

Why was shaft changed?
Was original symptom defo the shaft or could it have been output or wheel bearing?
What make replacement part was used?
Did the wheels get changed around or new tyres fitted during work?
Worth taking it back to garage for a view but above may lead to another fault diagnosis.

Shaft was changed as the mot noticed grease leaking from the cv boot. No vibration before it was changed.

Not sure what make the new one is but the garage charged £180 to supply and fit if that gives any indication.

Just wondered if it could cause any damage while I'm using it at the moment.

Thanks

Why not just change the gaiter? It's much cheaper to fit an OE gaiter on an otherwise functional shaft. The place that did the work were being lazy, swapping the shaft with an inferior item, just to save a few minutes.

It wasn't an OE or genuine shaft that has been fitted.

In my experience, non OE or genuine shafts vibrate. Have them put the old shaft back on, fitting a new OE gaiter first. ;)

Yes. It'll be causing damage to the output support bearings.
The IRD can fail in a number of ways. Cheap drive shafts that vibrate can ruin the bearing that supports it in the IRD causing it to collapse. This can lock up the diff causing the IRD casing to fracture and various nasties. Needing a replacement IRD these days is often terminal for a Freelander given the cost.

It's going back in to the garage that changed it tomorrow. In all fairness I don't think there's much life left in the old hippo now. Get this sorted now, but the next problem will consign it to the scrappers!!!

Hopefully they'll put the old shaft back on, with a new gaiter fitted.

What!! It's a 2006 FL1, so worth at least £1500 of anyone's money, more if it's got sensible mileage and high spec. My 05 SE has at least another 5 years before I'll even consider sending it for scrap.

But if you want to get rid of yours, I'll give you scrap value for it. ;)
