I have a TD5 Defender, and when I tried to start it the other day, lights on dash came on, could hear fuel pump, but nothing from the starter motor when I tried to start. Have checked fuses, and relays, all seem fine. When I checked the small wire connection to the starter there was no power there. If I jumped across the starter from post to small terminal it would come to life. The Defender was able to push start with no problems, but after parking up, tried to start with the key, and still nothing. Battery fully charged 12.6v
Would the immobiliser allow the vehicle to run if activated?
Is the roll over switch after the relay, and could that be at fault?
Any other sources of no power to starter?

I am at a loss, and running out of patients.

Can be an immobiliser problem, fuel stop still works but starter does not. Just because the relay klicks does not mean it is working. Swap with another to check. At the relay point [ relay out ] check for power coming from the ignition key when you turn it. Also check main relay main feed is live.

He everyone.
Well, got it running. Turned out to be the plug on the small pin for the starter. It is loose, and I still have to sort it, but can't get to it easily. I didn't want to crimp it any more without speaking with someone who is familiar with this kind of plug. I ended up pulling traction on it with a cable tie, and some other pipes. This pulled the plug so that it makes contact with the spade bit. After started, went through the usual pull out relays and re insert to get everything else to work. Still no Air Con, as I can't figure out which which relays they are.
At least it is running. Thanks for your help

Yes, it appears to have power. Just didn't think there was power when I measured it. The plug is a plastic piece, with the metal plug inside. When I tried to crimp it, I didn't want to move without breaking it. Will talk with my local mechanic, and get his advice. Thanks for the replies.

Well the random no start continued, so figured I would change out the solenoid of the starter. After some fluffing around, got the parts, and installed. Only mild swearing was needed to get the starter back in place. Fired up first time, and every time since. So far happy.

Photo shows old contacts, and plunger. Obvious arcing taking place, and one contact had a spot that was arcing, possibly meaning it was not seated flush.
Anyways, this drama seems to be resolved, on the the next dramas with my 110.

Cheers,

Ken
