Hi again. Another problem with my TD4, I wonder if anyone can shed any light?
Driving this morning, there was a strange noise, which I think is transmission related.
Above 2500 rpm the only way I can describe the noise is a loud whoosh (ish). It sounded like excess wind noise. It does not happen when the car is stationary and the engine is revved.
Parking the car, on full lock, there was a clunk so I have not driven it further.
The OWUT shows the vcu is ok.
The car in now at a local garage (I live in Spain) but I don't have a lot of faith in the mechanics here. The guy this morning swore blind there is no fluid in the vcu!!
Not a lot to go on I know but if anyone has any thoughts, I would be grateful. Cheers.

How did he know there's no fluid in the VCU?

I'm no expert on these but recently had what sounded like a loud road noise type of whoosh - it was the support bearings.

There's lots of very experienced Freelander repair chaps hereabouts, they'll probably narrow this down for you :)

You said the OWUT was ok. How ok was it? What times and weights and stuff?
Also are the tyres correct, all the same make, model and size, with the least worn on the rear.

The mechanic wasn't talking specifically about my vcu, he thought that none of them contain fluid.
The OWUT was done at the side of the road, so not at all scientifically. I thought the vcu was the likely cause of the problem so I jacked a wheel up and was able to turn the wheel by hand, with resistance, but not excessive. I wanted to check it wasn't locked solid.
The tyres are all the same, least worn on the rear.

Would worn vcu support bearings produce the clunk I heard when parking on full lock? That was the most worrying bit!!

I was getting terrible clunk/graunching noise from the rear of my 1.8 petrol when reversing on full lock. Turns out it was rotting out where the rear subframe attaches to the rear floor, allowing the subframe to move and amplifying the noise through the floor. Nasty !

Haven't seen that reported for a while! Its a known problem with Freelander and on here is known as the "cracked chassis".

I don't think that its usually caused by corrosion, I think normally its due to fatigue where the captive nut that the subframe bolt secures into breaks free.

If it is that, its a pain - you have to cut a hole in the boot floor to get to the nut and weld it up.

Have a search on here for cracked chassis to see whats the best way to diagnose whether it is it or not.
