2004 TD4 Gearbox oil change Filler Plug

Anybody help please. Instead of a plug on top of the gearbox as per numerous online photos of the process of refilling the box I have what appears to be a metal cap with wire protruding from it, maybe the cap lifts up but it would seem I have to move a soloing hose to access it . Anyone know what it is, if I’m meant to fill from here or it’s not the usual box. Many thanks.

Hi David.
First do you have a FL1 manual or an Auto.

From the photo it looks like a FL1 either way the plug in the photo as nothing to do with the gear box oil change.

If it's a manual FL1 then the gearbox fill and drain plugs are accessed by removing the NS front wheel with car on axles stands,

Make sure you can undo the filler plug first before dropping the oil.

Then the drain plug.

Fill with a good pump as below.

Auto is a different procedure.

Thanks Arctic but it’s an auto which is why I can’t understand why there isn’t the usual TD4 auto g/box plug there. I broke the crankshaft in 2018 and had a newer engine fitted but I can’t think that anything would have changed there. Has run well ever since , just getting a bit noisy when hot. Too late I drained the oil while on ramps and it’s now on a Jack I was investigating the near side wheel arch.

Wow how did you brake the crankshaft in 2018? this video may help you.

Thanks Arctic 2, the video has solved it, it shows my cap with the protruding wires and on my car the plug is totally obscured by a massive neoprene type hose which will have to come off before I can access the plug. So grateful. Broke the crankshaft too much right clog I think is the phrase. I got a garage near Axminster ( where it broke) to remove the engine get a replacement from a breakers in Exeter and fit it all for around £1000 which I thought was terrific, I certainly didn’t want to throw the car away, they’d never heard of a broken crankshaft on that engine before. Lesson learnt I treat it much more tenderly.

TD4 has a cast iron crank and they can fracture, particularly if an impact gun is used !!

Or, in my case, you pull a trailer with 2 large ponies in !! Possibly

I could have used the ponies ! I joined the AA they were great and took me to the garage and then the station. I’m a sports car fan ( 13 Lotus’s or Loti amongst others) but I’m very fond of this Freelander in spite of the girlfriend calling it my Van. Cheers
