Was it a normal garage or a landy specialist that did the work? what did they re-programme on the ecu and why? was it definately black smoke and not grey?

It sounds more like it was running on on its own oil to me which would produce grey smoke. What's the oil level on the dipstick like?

have they checked the inertia switch?

Is the fuel pump noisey or gugling?

im with ratty on this 1.my mates pajero bag of ****e had same problem, it was reving on its own and wouldnt turn off, was smoking like a bastid too. was the turbo at fault and pooring oil into the inlet so was runnin on its own oil.

thanks 4 dat smoke was black, and have been told it was a turbo prob, but they cant get it to start, it turns over very well, they've fitted a new starter andwiring to the injectors they sell only used landys, they are falling over themselves to help me but i dont think the garage they take it to are landy specialists, any other ideas ??????
cheers plod
