Hi.

I posted this a few years ago and did nothing about it since then. Basically I have a TD4 2002 Mk1 with a noisy aircon pump/compressor. The system is full of gas so that's OK.

My original question was about the aircon clutch which makes a horrific noise like a small road drill. I discovered that the fuse was pulled, (fs4 or fs9), since the previous owner must have had the same issue so pulled the fuse. After a few trials I left it out for a few years to keep it quiet.

With the recent hot weather I thought I'd try it again a put the fuse back in and went for a short run. Anything above 1000 rpm and it's quiet but below this and the noise comes back so I removed the fuse again but now the noise is there all the time under 1000rpm either with f4, f9 or the relay removed.

Any thoughts on what is wrong please? I believe it's definitely the clutch.

I read somewhere about an under voltage adapter kit which is a simple resistor I think. Otherwise where can I get a new clutch and coil from?

Kind regards

It's most likely the bearing on the clutch plate. It's a replaceable bearing, although not officially.;)

Hi and thanks for the reply.
I can confirm that the clutch now seems to be locked in all of the time or at least partially locked in, maybe due to corrosion.

As soon as I can I'll get underneath and remove the clutch to free it off.

Thanks

Hi again.
I finally got to the bottom of the problem by taking the car to my local garage.
They found that the bottom pulley had failed due to the rubber coupling which is bonded to the split pulley arrangement had almost shredded itself apart. This went quiet with revs above 1200 RPM probably because of centrifugal forces.

Replacing the pulley cured the noise issue and restored a silent Air Con to fully working. The total cost for new pulley and belt fitting was £221 plus VAT.

I could have tackled it myself but these days I don't have the facilities that I used to have.

Thanks again to all who have helped.
