Hi to you all,

This is my first posting and I thought as I was buying my first Land Rover I should come to get some expert advice from the people who really know!

I am about to part with my cash for a 2001 Freelander 2.5V6 GS Automatic that I have seen online and I was wondering what sort of typical model problems I should look out for when viewing it?

The owner has mentioned the manifold problem - baffles were how he described it, and a bill of £740 to repair it. I have asked him to get it sorted before I collect. Any tell tale signs to make sure it is done? (other than the noise!)

The car has only done 48k miles and has a FL-RSH, do you think £6k is a good price?

Like I said I appreciate your knowledge and advice and welcome any help offered.

Thanks again and I hope I can become a contributor to the forum once I become an owner!

Best wishes,

Bonz.

Hi Bonz and welcome,
I took the plunge about 5 months ago and brought a 2000 model V6 estate. Lovely car to drive but boy do they drink fuel. I get around 19 mpg around town and NEVER more than 24 mpg on long runs.
Car has recently blown a head gasket, a problem I thought was common on the 1.8 litre only. In the garage at the moment but the bill could be around the £2000 mark including having the heads skimmed and new cam belts.
You should check the water level out when you buy it and check for signs of water in the oil.
Same as any 4x4 check the underside for signs of damage due to heavy off road use.
You may want to get a AA check on it for peace of mind, only a thought.
Will you be getting a warranty? If do make sure it's a good one. Mine had a £1000 limit on it for claims. Very easy to reach this if the head gasket goes.
Good luck

Avoid the petrol models, both 1.8 and V6, those engines have a terrible reliability record.

Spend more and buy a TD4. Within a year you will get your money back on the fuel saving alone.
