2001 4.6 HSE Won’t shift

Has anyone come across this issue and possibly a solution? My 2001 HSE 4.6 will not move when put in “D” but if I shift past that to “1” it will drive normal, shifting to “2” and “3” for regular traffic speeds. At every stop, have to go back into “1” and repeat. Ideas? Occasionally a loud clunk is heard during “1”-“2” shift.
