I'm thinking of buying a used 2000 Trooper LS with 60,000 miles on it. It
recently had a new engine installed by the dealer. Apparently the original
engine had a loss of oil problem and Isuzu replaced it under warranty??
Anyone have any experience with this model year? I'm currently driving a '93
Trooper and I love it.

Thanks/Gregg

I've had my 2000 Trooper LTD from new, with 40k miles on it. It's still
running sweet. I do check the oil every few weeks and usually expect to put
in around half a pint or so every 1500 - 2000 miles. I get the oil and
filter changed every 3750 miles (halfway between the recommended intervals).
Most of the time I'm doing local miles, but have had trips up to 350 miles
in a day without any aches or pains. I've also done some mild offroading
to reach some remote Boy Scout events, and some snow and ice stuff enough to
get the TOD lights flashing up a storm, all without any fuss or drama. My
first Isuzu, and I'm real happy with it.

Good luck

We have a 94 Trooper, and bought a band new 2002 in April or 2003...probably
one of the last new ones to be had anywhere in the US... Got it up to 7600
miles so far and no complaints. From what I've seen of it thus far, I'm not
a big fan of the TOD system (though it is nice to just hit the button).
Seems like it's more REactive and PROactive. What's everyone else's
experience with the TOD been? Aside from that, I've got nothing bad to say
about it. We tow an 18' travel trailer, and it handles it wonderfully. The
94 did fine, but you can tell the newer and larger engine has more punch to
it. The "power mode" button makes a bigger difference in the 02 than it did
with the 94. As for oil loss, I've yet to have to add any at all to the new
one, even when towing. When towing in the 94, I'd add 1/3 quart every fuel
tank (150 miles or so). There's not a whole lot of difference between the
94 and the 02 (and 93/94 is the same, 00/02 shouldn't be much if any
different) aside from engine, transmission, etc...

Why on EARTH would you be happy with a vehicle that's only done 40k miles,
that you have to put half a pint every 1500 miles? Surely you went back to
the dealership and asked why?
I have owned 2 Isuzu's.and would NEVER own another....there are far better
4WD vehicles out there, that dont have motor issues....(only my opinion)

BS, there's nothing better out there for that price. I've never had a
more reliable vehicle. Sure Troopers are a little heavy on oil, thats
part of the package.. :-/

Oil is cheap.

Thats just that engine... and even tho it takes oil it's still very
reliable, and Isuzus other engines (real Isuzu Japan not GM america ones)
like the 4JB1 2.8 turbo diesel are the best out there in their capacity
class for power and reliablity.

Í've got the 2.8TD in an 88 bighorn and it's better than the 2.4 2.5 and 2.7
diesels Mitsi and Toyota use(d).
Sure it's not up to matching the Nissan 4.2 or the Duramax 6.5, but they're
in a different class.

WRONG.

I own two Isuzu Troopers, a 2000 LS and a 1997 S, both of which have
gone through hell and back. Want proof, how about one of only thirty
vehicles to successfully complete Devils Culdra in CA, and no, I am
not talking thirty models of vehicles, but thirty vehicles total, one
of which was my 00' Trooper. Simply put, the Isuzu Trooper
is--was--the most sound and reliable import on the market. When off
road or hazardous conditions are factors you will not find one SUV
under $75k that competes with the Trooper, simply put, no one
compares.

This winter alone I have faced 12" snow conditions, with an inch of
ice underneath the snow and my Trooper did not spin out once via the
TOD system, however, in RWD the Trooper will and can slip and
tailspin. When the Trooper did slip in RWD it was not unexpected,
when handling the Trooper under slippery conditions it was very
predictable and slips were easily overcome using the basic
principles--which is more than I can say for the other SUVs I have
owned.

I have faced sixty five degree inclines, forty degree planes, and
twelve inch rocks and not once has the Trooper let me down. My 97'
has 298,341 miles on it and my 00' has 53,249 miles, both of which
have not required any major service repairs. The only surprise that
has came was the drivers side window, which had to be totally replaced
because the window mounts broke, but besides for that there has been
nothing else out of the ordinary in regards to these vehicles.

What you will find is that people either love or hate the Trooper, but
the bottom line is if you do not need and SUV then you will hate the
Trooper, however, those of us who do need real SUVs love the Trooper.
If a trendy mini van is what your after then you will most certainly
be disappointed with the Trooper. But if your looking for a rugged,
second to none SUV (ORV) then the Trooper is your only solution,
unless you can afford a Hummer.

I have owned many other SUVs including a 4Runner, Grand Cherokee, LR
Discovery, Bronco, Explorer, Blazer, Silverado, and Wagoneer and in
all honesty none of them can compare.

I've had to park in 2 feet of snow for days on end this winter, no
problem. I only once had some difficulty in the snow so I put the 4WD in
low gear and out we cruised... I then discovered the handbrake was still
on!
