Hi There,

Great Forum

I'm thinking of buying a P38 as I have a BMW e39 Tds.
I like the simplicity of the engine, ie it's not as complicated as the common rail engines and there are lots of spare now available, affordable.

However I have a problem with my car,
And I feel a P38 owner may be able to help me.

I took off injector pipes to gain access to
Fuel pressure regulator solenoid
which is fitted at the base of the injector pump.

Got this out and, fine, replaced with a spare off another car.

Put everything back together and no joy.
No start, with a Booster Pack, With a Tow.
Bled injector pipes in turn,
Checked Glow Plugs individually,
Black smoke on Turning over.

My only conclusion is that I've put injector pipes on incorrectly.
Hence the Timing is out and the car won't start.

Has anyone got a Layout as per which injector pipe goes where,
i.e. which injector leads to where on injector pump..?
It's so tight around the pump side of things, I must've got a couple on wrong.

Can anyone with a P38 Range Rover with the bmw 2.5 tds engine fitted tell me which firing order the injector pipes follow.
ie. which pipe from injector leads to which nozzle on injector pump.

The following diagram is as far as I have got.

I'd be very grateful.
thanks.

would be very difficult to get pipes on wrong i did have a similar problem with mine after doing pump timing which was nearly impossible to start and bleed after checking it was the in tank fuel pump which had failed easy to check unscrew fuel filter turn ignition on and fuel should pump out of housing no fuel, pump kaput!
just to add it will start and run fine when the pump has gone just very difficult to bleed when it is not working.
may be of some help!

Nope.
left Pump in PLace.
didn't want to open up that can of worms.

I got some info and pics from a helpful member from a BMW forum,
Hopefully, I'll be able to fathom the firing order from that.

If anyone has any diagrams or pics of the detail of the pipes travelling from pump to injector though, I'd be delighted.

thanks.

Don't you mean timing solenoid? Think you have already opened a can of worms doing what you did. If you don't know where the injector pipes go, which really cannot be put back wrongly, why do you play with the pump?
You cannot play with injector pumps if you don't know what your doing. Even if you have photos.
Firing order is 153624

I whipped off the manifold again and swapped over pipes that were at numbers 3 & 6.
Sure enough Car Fired up.
It's all sweet now. Running well.

Thanks To all for their Help.

For Future reference.
The above picture is the firing Order for the tds.

as Wammers pointed out
Firing order is 153624
(Thanks For That)

I wasn't playing with anything,

It was the Fuel Pressure Regulator Solenoid that I was replacing.
I didn't adjust any timing or attempt to remove the injector pump.
Injector pipes CAN indeed be put back incorrectly if the brackets are not all present.
Granted, There's very little margin for error,
however there is that little margin.

and that's the mistake I made.

I've done no harm and learned in the process.

Thanks again to everyone who helped.

All The best.
D.C.
