Driving along today and the kick up and kick down was playing up causing the Rev counter to go up and down by 500rpm ...also jerking the engine...so from standstill I put my foot down and it changes gear erratically with the revs going up above normal and will keep doing this like it's trying to change gear but cant..when slowing it jerks then is OK ...then jerks like I'm braking every other second

All that a weekend mechanic can do with these boxes is to check fluid quantity & quality and the external linkages. If the fluid is low or black then it might be worth investing in new fluid and filter. A bottle of Lucas gearbox oil might be worth it.
If nothing improves then it's box out and either rebuild or replace.

When checking auto box level...dipstick has two holes...one min..and one max .....my sticks is covered up in oil ..4 inches above top hole ...with very loose black tinged red oil ....shame on me as this is the first week I've checked it since we had it ....this can't be right can it ....seems to me like po overfilled by 2-3 liters judging by dipstick

Level should be checked with a cold engine idling. move stick slowly through all gears then back to neutral, remove & wipe the stick now check the level.
If the oil is black, change it & the filter pronto, then change the oil at least once more after a couple of hundred miles.

Oil was like muddy green brown....filter changed and fresh fluid. ..going out in a while to crunch up some miles before I drain it again ...on bright side ....eurocarparts had a Friday offer on...10w40 for 9.99 ...might as well change the oil tomorrow for that price ...p.s. the gasket was a right bastard to get on and keep it there while doing up the bolts....

Still doing the clutch slip thing but not as bad ...but still very noticeable ...I think I'll change one more time and add a lucas type product and see ....if not its going to flee bay

Sump magnet had usual flakes on it ...to me a healthy autobox Sump magnet...nothing in the oil which you can see or pick up with a magnet...just murky dark old fluid

Just making a decision to add lucas or wynns transmission additive at mo...see if that helps ...I've got to change it again to get the rest of the fluid out ...so I'll add it with the atx fluid on my last change .

So if you're lucky there's nothing breaking up or crunching itself inside. So fresh fluid and maybe some Lucas might do the trick.
If you're having issues re-fitting the sump you might want to think of pumping it out through the dipstick tube.

Only issue was brit part gasket not being deep enough of the ridge compared to the one I took off...maybe the ridge was 16yr old indent..could be original gasket lol couldn't it ...job done ...nice to get back to mechanics after 25 yrs off...I trained as a mechanic at college. .proper clueless sometimes until someone gives me a kick up the arris
