2.25D starter in to 300tdi

Will the starter from a 1977 sIII diesel fit in a 300tdi? Asking because i have a bad starter in the disco but a good starter on the bench, but from an older vehicle. But will it blend?

if its the small later type it will otherwise down pipe is in the way for a standard non turbo stater
