Would a 2 1/4 petrol have enough grunt to run RR diffs and taller tyres or should i just stick to RR diffs.

No overdrive, I'm about to get a chassis with the axles that have RR diffs, just that i prefer the way the S2 sits with taller tyres.

Hi, I have an 88 series 3 petrol with standard diffs and find it a bit undergeared, even with the overdrive I feel it could pull a slightly higher gear.

I had a l/weight with R/R diffs and 7.50's.

so did i , and they do feel like they should have had 3.54 diffs to begin with once youve fitted them

I would say yes...change the rear first and road test...just dont try 4x4.

Thats what i did.
TBH, if you don't off road, just do the rear diff and take off front prop.
