Hi all I have recently fitted an 82 DEG thermostat to my series 3 2/4 Diesel and since then the temp gauge is always in the red, I have found out that the gauges are calibrated for a 74 DEG thermostat does anyone know how to recalibrate the gauge for the higher temp thermostat.

As far as I am aware there is not any way of gauge calibration. Fitting an 82 deg stat at this time of year is considered standard practice. It only makes a difference on warm up time before the stat opens. Have you re checked the water level since the change? It may be down to air. Some series three's have a deflector plate in the thermostat housing with a small hole on it these can become blocked.

Is your fuel gauge accurate as it shares a voltage regulator on back of speedo which reduces voltage to an average of 10V , hence if failed will give 12V and gauge will read higher.

You first need to find out how hot the engine really is....best way is with one one of those hand held laser temp gauges that are on ebay for around £10...or a thermometer into the neck of the rad when up to temp,

I wouldn't mess with the gauge till you find this out....

Do you know what the correct temp should be for normal, i dont lose any water and she never overheats. I think trapped air below sensor could be an issue as mentioned in a previous comment ive only had this problem since changing the sensor i thought the new one was faulty so tried another and its the same

i would fit a better temp guage. I know here in the U.S a mechanical temp guage that will give you numbers can be had for $16 so about £9.5.

Ahhh you didn't say you changed the sender....there are lots of different type and all will screw into your head....how sure are you that you have the correct one,

If you fitted an 82c stat that what temp the engine should get to and no more if everything is working as it should,

The std temp gauge has given 100% service for me in 40 years of series landrovering,

Why did you fit a new sender...do you still have the old one???

No mater what stat you fit you std temp gauge will be fine with it....it req NO re- calibration,

Get yourself a laser gauge and all will become clear....this is the one I have,

As said get a temp gun to check you're not overheating but it will be the wrong sender or regulator at fault. For me the difference between a 74 and 82 degree gauges is needle pointing at middle or top of the "N" on the guage, it shouldn't be anywhere near the red.
