Hi Guys and Gals,
Ive been reading from pages 708 through to 649 and so far there has been about 34 threads on the gearbox crunching from 1st to 2nd...
Now the thing is 25 out of the 34 say the gearbox has totally gone while the other 9 say that it is nothing to worry about, just put proper gearbox fluid in it and check the level, if it still happens then change the gears slower...
I know that there is two different types of manual gearbox's for the disco...
Your opinions please........................Thanks Tosh..

My one's an R380 box and the gears can crunch a little on 1-2. It did get a lot better when i drained out what appeared to be EP oil and refilled with ATF as the book says.

I just tend to go easy on the od girl and give her time to get it together when changing, i'm used to it now.

Crunching between 1st/2nd/3rd is not a reason to rush out and buy a new gearbox. Get used to it and change gear accordingly. Unless you like spending money of course in which case rush out and get yourself a nice new box.

As Hughsey said ;), my R380 crunches between 2nd & 3rd if I rush the gear change. Just change gear slower than you would in a normal car and you'll be fine. Changing the oil might help as well.

I just had my lt77 repaired and it cured the 1 2 3 crunches.

I decided to add some slick 50 to improve the change, which it did, but it brought back 2nd gear crunch.

Only crunches when you ask too much of it. Take it steady, rev match, double clutch, don't rush etc etc and it'll be fine
Then you can get on with enjoying the old girl :)

If you had a repaired box that didnt crunch why would you wanna add anything to it and how did slick improve it?

Thanks for the replies guys, I forgot to mention the 2nd reason for the question, The reason is that when I look at disco's for sale , some of them do mention that the gear boxes crunch between 1st and 2nd and so far I have dismissed these cars because of this very reason. So now I am armed with the above knowledge I wont dismiss these disco's in the future.. Once again Thankyou to all........Tosh..

Hi Nathan

I had it repaired to fix reverse gear which was smashed up, and replace some syncros.

The box however was not fully rebuilt, and it was still very notchy and quite stiff to change gear, especially when hot.

The slick 50 improved the gear change so it makes it much easier for me to shift gears when off road, but it has affected second gear syncro at road speeds :(

I used slick 50 in my civic type r box, which are usually a nightmare for redline shifts, and my dad used to use slick 50 in discos back in the day when they were newish.

I can only assume that cos my box is pretty well cooked anyway it is always gonna suffer from lt77 **** syncro problems! :D

Same here with second gear crunch alarming at first but a few threads on here quickly put my fears to bed. Drive it like a truck, take your gear shifts slowly and you will soon learn to drive it without getting the crunch. Pointless reparing it imo

There is some better stuff available on the market instead of slick 50. Ametech do some excellent additives for both gearbox and engine. I have used the engine additive and highly recommend it.

Tbh Dave, there is so much stuff on the Market I cba searching through it!

We used to use slick 50 in the final drives in the boats and my old man used to put it in discos way back.

It is because of this I tried it in my civic with great results, and hence my current disco.

I'm sure its a different product now to what it was then, and you don't even get the funky sticker anymore :(

Cheers, sam
