1995 300tdi over heating

Seeking advice for my poorly landy

i have a 1995 landy 300 tdi auto 2.5 diesel

was running perfectly fine then the other day the heater packed up ( blowing cold only ) but the engine started to over heat

first thing i did is check the oil and water which was low so i topped up

it still over heated :jaw:

on searching forums it suggested one of 3 things , either no coolant , a faulty thermostat or head gasket , sooooooo

i removed the thermostat , had a pressure check done ( that come bk fine ) and flushed the rad and filled with proper ammount of coolant ,

:jaw::jaw: it still over heated :confused::confused:

the engine is building alot of pressure so we inspected closer to find the water wasnt circulating well ( however the water pump is working )

the only way to clear the blocked pipe was to blow through it , woohoooo the blockage cleared , but within seconds oil started pooling out of the side of the engine :faint2::faint2:

any suggestions as to what is goin on ???
 
How do you know the pump is working? just because the pulley is spinning doesn't mean the impeller blades are (known problem with plastic impellers). Need to drop the pump out and check the impeller is firmly attached to the shaft.

With regard to oil, are you sure you didn't disconnect oil cooler pipes from radiator by mistake - and where did the oil come from?

Oh and go to the aptly named 'introduce yourself' thread before you get told off by the grown ups!!
 
the pump has been dropped out and checked all is well there , we checked the oil cooler pipes and all are secure and in place .

the leak came from the bottom left hand side of the engine ( located under the fuel filter )

ohhh and i tried to introduce my self but it wouldnt allow me to do so , ill have another attempt once the kiddies are sleepin :D

You believe correctly!! Pump casing can suffer from loose rivets and cause oil leaks. There is a 'how to' guide somewhere on here which may help.
 
thankyou ill look at it now , have u any ideas on what the over heating could of been as i am well stumped :(

its acting like a head gasket breakdown ( in some cases ) but not all the signs are there and the pressure test is fine
 
Is your rad getting warm all over, are the fins in good condition and clear of mud?

Have you read up on the correct way to fill the cooling system and bleed it (via the rad and thermostat bungs)?

Cant see how the cooling system and vac pump would be related, probably two separate issues but you only noticed vac pump leaking when looking at cooling system.
 
rad gets hot hot hot , fans all working correct , weve flushed and cleaned the water system { no gunk or sludge found }

thermostat replaced ( just incase ) but was ok anyway

only problem we could find was that the water didnt seem to be feeding through the top end pipes , so we had to blow through them to clear them , quite literally 5 seconds after doing this the oil leak happened , and it was little spots of oil it was a very very large puddle
 
hey , i was having a brainstorming moment last night and upon reading lord knows how many articles , i came across one that very briefly suggested that a dodgy vacuum seal can cause over heating ,

now please excuse me if this is a stupid question ( im far from a mechanic )

could the fact that the vacuum pump has just gone tits up be the reason my poor landy was overheating in the first place ??

thats no proof ,if gasket is blown through to waterway coolant will be forced out of header tank, usually head gasket failure shows up as staining on fire ring etc were gas under firing pressure can leak past gasket enough to pressurise system,that doesnt show on a 15 -20 psi pressure test,rad needs to be felt all over core for heat cool areas show rad fault, system level should be guaged through over flowing thermostat housing when bung removed not header tank ,head gasket would be my guess along with a few on here before
 
well ive put it in for a full over haul , head gasket timing belt water pump etc , bloody cars grrrrrr
