I am trying to replace the read door latch on my 1994 Defender 90 NAS. I can only find a replacement latch that has a built in key hole for an external lock. See the attached picture. My Defender does not have an external key hole lock on the rear door, and therefore no hole through the door. Can that housing be removed from the replacement part?

As all the lock is is a sleeve to take a barre that then interacts with the mechanism in the flat section I would have a good guess that you could just cut off the lock sleeve carefully and have no impact on the latch mechanism itself. However it is not something I have ever done. But if you have the wrong one and can’t send it back I would give it a go.

Thank you. That is seeming like the only option, with the exception of drilling a hole in the door to fit that housing. I can't find a comparable replacement part that does not have it.

I would certainly try that first before drilling the door. If it doesn’t work out you buy a new lock. H oh is much cheaper than buying a new door if that doesn’t work out!
Out of interest what is wrong with your current lock. Usually a good clean and lunrication is all they need to fix.

The current handle does not fully actuate the lever that grabs onto the door jam. As a result the door does not fully close or at all . I was able to remove the housing for the lock, at the expense of the lock in general, and install. Works great.

Thanks for your thoughts.
