1992 CHEVY 4X4 SILVERADO 5.7L 350 ENGINE

ONLY HAS 72K MILES AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED IN PERFECT CONDITION. RUNS GREAT
EXCEPT WHEN TOWING. IT DOES NOT HAVE THE POWER IT USED TO HAVE. IT STRAINS
ALOT ESPECIALLY GOING UP STEEP HILLS. HAS NEW PLUGS, PLUG WIRES, OIL, AND
NEW FILTERS. ANY IDEA WHY THE LACK OF POWER WHEN TOWING? COULD THIS BE A
CLOGGED CATALATIC CONVER?

Possibly but what grade of gas are you using? Low octane fuel on a
hot day towing will lead to detenation and the computer will retard
spark before you hear it most of the time but performance will take a
big hit.

You don't mention a new distributor cap and rotor?

He did not say it was missing. You might also check the fuel filter
because I have a problem with that one years ago with my 89 burb which
has the same engine but I suspect that it is a fuel quality issue were
it is retarding the spark a lot on hard pulls and it is hot outside.
Octane requiremnts go up with heat and load.

IT IS NOT MISSIMG. RUNS LIKE IT CAME OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR EXCEPT WHEN
TOWING. IT WAS MY FATHER'S TRUCK AND HE TOOK EXTREMELY GOOD CARE OF IT. HE
HARDLY EVER DROVE IT AND WHEN HE DID THE TRUCK PROBABLY NEVER TOPPED 60
MPH. I THOUGHT THAT SINCE THE ENGINE NEVER GOT BLOWN OUT AT HIGH SPEEDS
THE CARBON MAY HAVE BUILT UP IN THE CONVERTER. IT IS A PELLETIZED TYPE
CONVERTER BUT I CANNOT HEAR ANY PELLETS INSIDE IT WHEN YOU HIT IT. I THINK
THIS MEANS THAT THE PELLETS HAVE SIEZED TOGETHER.

I have a 92 K1500 350 engine...

I had a wierd thing happen to me. Truck ran fine at idle, but any
load or hard acceleration it would ping bad and run like crap. Never
set a code. I had to replace the starter one time and noticed the
knock sensor while I was replacing the starter. For some reason I
grabbed the knock sensor and it was loose. LIke it was broken
internally??? Also the wire (pig-tail) was damaged. I imagine that
somehow something hit it just enough to damage it. Short story is
that I replaced the knock sensor and the connector and the truck ran
fine.

The knock sensor is easy to change and if you can't figure anything
else out then its worth a few dollars to change this. You also need
to make sure your timing is right. ON an older truck with some miles
a timing chain may need replacment.

I seriously doubt it is the converter as a lot of them do not even use
beads now so the bang test is without merit. I have 173K on a 89 burb
I both new and the original cat still flows fine. Honestly they plug
up rarely though some do happen but when it does it is just about
always because the engine ran rich and in a very poor tune for LONG
time and fouled the converter out. I strongly suspec you have a fuel
quality issue as mine 89 is guttless in hot weather with 87 in it and
I gave up even trying to use it in it years ago.

The best test for the cat WRT being plugged is a pressure gauge on the
exhaust manifold (usually put in the O2 sensor position. You won't
hear pellets inside when you hit it. They are much too small (size of
a BB) and too light to hear.

If the cap and rotor are old, the build up can just cause a weak spark
which 'I' can notice as a loss of power on my engines.

Too many folks forget to check them with the fancy 'e'lectronic
ignitions because they don't arc out as fast as with the old points
system.

He still didn't say if it was checked. It was his dad's city truck, my
bet is the cap and rotor are original still....

It sure is an easy check and a cheap fix if that is the trouble.
