I just recently bought a 91 4Runner with the automatic A340H
transmission. I can't find a definitive answer on the web about this,
so I thought I'd post here.

Is the 4WD system on this vehicle shift-on-the-fly, or do I need to
stop/slow down significantly first?

I had a Wrangler, you could engage at up to 55mph for 4WD hi.

Please respond with the allowable shift speeds for both 4WD hi and 4WD
lo if you know them.

4Hi<->4Lo generally requires the vehicle be stopped or very slow speed.

If you have the Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) front axle,
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/add/index.htm
then I think 50MPH is the max. 2Hi<->4H shifting speed. Your Owner's Manual would have the exact specs. You might try asking
on the Yotatech web forum:

Lots of 2nd gen owners hang out there.
