I’m going to replace my fuel filter on my 200tdi D90. It’s mounted in the bulkhead and appears to have a priming level (circled in picture attached) but have never used.

I’ve read differing posts and opinions saying priming is needed or not needed depending. If I fill the new filter with as much diesel as much as possible, loosen bleed screw and turn over so it will self purge… will it or will air get trapped in lines? If air does get trapped and the bleed screw stays cracked.. would it self purge over time or more timely and costly if it does?

I think the primer is the lever shown but right now feels very loose.. no pressure or tension at all.. but maybe that would change.

Seems like a pretty simple task.. but dont want to cause anymore headaches if air does get trapped.

Appreciate any input and thoughts!

Thanks!!

If you crack off the bleed screw , and use the lever to draw fuel from tank that’s what I do , although takes a bit of priming
If the lever not doing anything it means the pump lever has been moved by the cam lobe so you can’t get the full pump so you need to turn the engine slightly to move camshaft 1/4- 1/2 turn
Prefilling from top with syringe might reduce pumping priming time

As above, and if there is a tad of air left the injection self bleed will soon sort as engine fires up. Filling filter most the way before screwing on saves a lot of pumping on lift pump lever.

Fill new filter with diesel, refit filter, start it and allow to tick over for a minute or two, you will hear any air go through as it might misfire slightly for a few seconds then will run clear.
The bosch ve pump is very good at self bleeding as it has its own built in vane fuel pump.

Exactly as lynall says above. Just fill the filter before you screw it in (not with all the crud poured out of the old filter!) and start it up.

If... You have no clean diesel to fill the new filter with, you need to mess about with the lift pump, but, if you can fill the filter, you just screw it on and start it up.

Thanks guys. Was aligning but makes me feel better to see. Sounds as long as the filter is full or nearly full.. there shouldn’t be any issues if not primed.. But, will fill, keep bleed screw cracked and try prime lever regardless. If not will just turnover then tighten down bleed.

Haven’t see the facet lift pumps but will take a look. Thx again!

Am I in the minority where by I do not bother priming or prefilling the filter and never have?
There is enough fuel left in the system to start the engine and leave it idling, once idling it will very quickly fill and bleed itself. May occasionally splutter but never enough to die and a minute and no effort later you are good to go.

Thanks Dag. I will likely still fill up and may even include a 50/50 of Diesel conditioner or cleaner and then just drop back in.. can’t hurt but good to know no issues w your experience with the self purging. I shouldn’t have any issues if it won’t prime manually.

I do the same but when the engine has ran a while first. Then it's not idling cold after the filter change.
