I have a 1990 range Rover 2.5 vm td and have an intermittant noise. The noise sounds similar to a fan belt squeal, only lasting for a few seconds, sometimes quiet but at other times loud. I have ruled out the fan belt, alternator, visc fan, steering pump and all the usual. Sometimes you can drive the car for an hour with no noise, other times it happens within minutes of setting off. Seems to be coming from the front - has any body got any ideas ?

Hi.
How very helpfull. On one of the posts on a p38 sqealing there was a suggestion of the squeal being a bearing, have you tried spraying the almost magical WD40 on the various components to see if you can silence it for a couple of seconds and try to locate it that way.

Cheers, Nick.

I did say sorry tho.... I use a mechanics stethoscope to trace odd noises, but a length of plastic pipe will do_Or you could use a long screwdriver to listen to each pulley bearing around the front end.If it is only happening at odd times when driving then I would have thought that if it is a bearing then it ought to growl a bit more than the others all the time.

Thanks for your replies. Have tried WD40 on everything but no good. The noise only happens when the vehicle is moving, and then only for a few seconds at a time so its very difficult to pin point.
