I’m looking to sell my 1979 Series 3 SWB. I’ve owned it for a year and used it as a daily driver to commute mostly. When I bought it, it had a 2.5n/a 12j engine fitted which lasted about 8 months before dying so ive since fitted a 300tdi which had about 100K on the clock.
The gearbox is still a normal Series 3 that works perfectly in all gears inc hi/low. The diffs were changed by the previous owner to 3.54:1 ratio ones from a Range Rover. I have swapped the front axle for a good later series 3 one as the axle that was fitted when I bought it needed swivels, bearings, brakes etc.
The rear axle has had new bearings, new seals and seal collar as it was leaking heavily and the brakes are good and now work.
The chassis is solid but not pretty, it needed one small patch for its MOT a week ago. The previous owner had a front dumb iron fitted not long before I bought it.
The bulkhead is in good condition, with no corrosion on the scuttle corners and decent footwells.
Doors are good, not rotten and all locks work. Rear door is fitted with a defender wiper motor that needs wiring in
Its fitted with a good strong winch bumper and steering guard too and is also fitted with an X-Eng Handbrake conversion and servo assisted brakes. Its got a southdown snorkel and mounts on the rear for a high lift jack. At the back there is a tow bar and spotlights. On the roof are homemade roofbars, which are handy but not bulky like a full rack. It has chequer plate wing tops and sill covers. Its fitted with wellar style wheels and big 10.5” wide tyres with loads of life in them.
Inside it has defender front seats and cubby box. In the rear It has a bench seat on one side and a single on the other side. I fitted inertia seat belts in the front. There is also a radio fitted and speakers in front and back.
She's not pretty but solid.
