Am restoring this Jeep for grins. It is physically longer both overall
and wheelbase than a CJ5 or CJ7. Has a column mounted three speed and
the I-4 engine. My question is, how much trouble will it be to upgrade
powertrain. Would like a larger engine to aid highway cruising. Any
info will be greatly appreciated.

It is a Jeep.....

Most any Jeep drivetrain will drop right in. The most common engine
around and easiest I guess is the 258 ci carb engine. That has lots of
get up and go. A newer 4.0 injected engine can fit too, but then you
have a computer to mess with.

They also came in a 304 ci V8.

You should ask over on rec.autos.makers.jeep+willys, lots of folks know
the old ones and what fits easy in the way of trannies, etc...

22R motor,85 toy axles 4:10 gears stock, Spool in back locker in
front,2WD Tranny into a SAMURAI T-case ( Divorced ) with 6 to 1 T- case
gears that will handle 800HP(so dont worry about strength), some 35"
Tires should make it go anywhere........and still do 85 on the
highway...: )
if ya' want more Gear than that put a Volvo 4-speed between the Tranny &
T-case....good times!!!
