Have a 110td (19j) Used to start on first turn, slowly taken longer and longer to start (heater plugs?). But this sunday morning disaster, sounds like it starts to turn but then the starting motor just whirrs.
New starting motor??

could just be the solenoid that is gubbed. i seen one for sale on ebay not too long ago! it might still be there.

Could be a knackered starter ring. I'd find out what it definitely is before buying anything. Unless you've got loads of money.

Whip it off, strip it down, give it a clean, look for an attend to dodgey parts (if possible - you can self recondition) Put it back in and see what happens. Worst you have done is given your starter an overhaul.
