110 wheels

Hi there, I'm new to this forum and in need of some advice. Please excuse my naivety - I own a Defender 110, at present it has 750/16 tyres on and i'm after getting some new steel wheels and some tyres that are a bit wider, the problem is i haven't got a clue what size wheels i should buy that will take a wider tyre. Can anyone out there help?

first of all it might be easier to choose the tyre you want and then it should say what size wheels it needs.

Be careful of going over top on larger wheels / tyres
gearbox tranfer box diffs will all take a hammering
and could fail in time........

I went for 235/85 r16 not too big...
the bigger you go the less grip off road
and you could give yuorself problems on the road

im running 265/75 on a standard 90... well its lifted 2" now but it didnt need that for the 265's.

bigger=less grip offroad? how do you come to that conclusion? grip=surface area of tire in contact with surface area of ground.

go for a tread design that suits your needs. if like me you only use yours at weekends and that generally involves driving somewhere to go offroad then go for mud terrains.

if you use it 7days a week and commute and dont want to go offroad get road bias ones!

there are always all terrains

spend wisely as a full package will cost a fair bit and i doubt anyone would want to spend that twice.

Am I right in saying that the surface area in contact with the ground is entirely dependent on the tyre pressures? As I understand it, with wider tyres you get a wider and shorter contact patch, whereas with 235/85R16's for instance you get a narrower but longer contact patch.

Hence you need to pick whether you want to float over it, or dig down into it (whatever "It" is..mud, sand etc.).

I've stuck with BFG M/T's 235/85R16's which seem to do the job nicely and really do dig down into the slippery mud round here to provide a good amount of traction.

i saw bigger as in the 235 vs. 265 argument. not the width. ie. 75/85 the narrower tires will dig down and find traction in theory. but a good tread pattern and plenty of tread will always win regardless of width... and yes it all depends on tire pressure. less pressure=more surface area regardless of tire choice.
