I'm relatively new to the Defender and having a stock 110 XS and then taken it on an LRE adventure day at Balla I want to look at worthwile upgrades for it without going mad. So my requirement is fairly tame off roading and I use it as a shooting truck so a few 30 mile motorway trips.

Im considering the following.

265/75 BF Mud Terrains & adjust lock stops to suit
Safari Snorkel
Stage 1 remap and filter
Brakes, EBC pads, Vented Discs and Braided hoses

Probably in this order. Does this seem about right or am I missing something or going overboard?

As he says its tame offroading I guess that means he's just greenlaing

You don't need giant tyres or any of that crap really

A stock defender should be able to get round a greenlane with some mud tyres on it, maybe a snorkel if theres a river but no need for the rest of that

I take a stock disco shooting and it's fine

If you're fitting the snorkel and you do intend on wading, then fit a breather kit also. You can get a good kit off ebay for about £25 rather than an expensive Mantec one.

If you fit vented discs, you will need to repace the front calipers as they are wider. Also, make sure you order up the hub gaskets, locktab washers (one each per wheel), and a small thing of loctite 270. Depending on how rusted your caplier bolts are, might be an idea to replace these also. They are 12 sided non-standard bolts that round off easy if they are rusty. On and get a hub nut socket.

As James said though. vented discs are often critised for deep mud use, as people say they get clogged.

Dont know much about the remap. Mine's a 300tdi.

The tyres are expensive, so I would say have a think about how much off road and on road use they'll get. All Terrains might be better for you if your useage is more on road than extreme off road. (Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on neither tyres or off roading).

If you have got a few quid to burn, you're forgetting the winch and bumper, spot lights I'm sure there are a sh1t load of other toys you dont currently have. :)

Gonna guess you didn't actually read the OP then??

A remap would make a world of difference on the road and better stopping ability isn't to be sniffed at.

I would go with 235/85r16 all terrains for tame greenlanes and occassional offroad.

I would also not bother with a snorkel, not required.

what the others say about brakes seems wise.

I would spend some money on good footwell mats and a rubber liner for the rear, maybe seat covers if you want to keep your xs 'extra special' when your out covering it in mud and ****e.

Yes I did read it actually

A re-map is not needed for light offroading and as has been said its more work than just changing the pads and discs

He didn't factor in those parts to the cost

then why would he want to buy EBC then :baby:

They seem to have quite a following if they truly are no good. I think the main issue is, too many people pay for the Greenstuff or basically stock grade pads thinking they are an upgrade.

The yellowstuff is rather good IMO. Not claiming the best, but certainly an upgrade.

Op. I say ignore all the nay sayers, they are just being grumpy old farts

I can't see anything wrong with what you are wanting to do.

Thanks for the input chaps (and the p1sstaking) If I told you the full story of how I ended up in a Defender you'd take the micky a lot more. Lets just say I am somewhere inbetween wanting mods that will improve the car for my real life needs and hell yes some I'm looking at just because I think they make the Defender look good!! All view greatly received.

Good quality matts and a boot liner I missed. Will do some wading and yet to experience how much they actually leak, just heard the stories. So possibly carpets coming out anyway!
