10W40 synthetic in TD5?

Is it alright to use a 10W40 fully synthetic oil in the TD5 engine. The Haynes manual says 5W40 but I have 10 litres of 10W40 spare after my BMW was written off.

+1^^^ ...that's what i use in the summer...but for UK temeperatures it's good in the winter too, especially if the engine has many miles
