I'm gonna pop a 24 spline diff and cvs ect on the front of my 90 once I've rebuilt a spare front axles for my 90 however the current 10spline arb locker in the front I'd like to move to the rear and I have a set of shafts for the rear that came out of my old drum brake axle when I swapped it for a rear disco 24spline with discs.

My question before I have to pull them myself and check. Are the 10spline shafts the same length, ie can I go back to a 10spline rear diff with disks and splines?

Yes, I think so .. ;)

To recap, 1989 90, with Disco 300Tdi axles which had 24 spline half shafts/diffs, but I have a 10 spline ARB diff in the rear.

To make the rear diff work properly I bought a pair of RRC 10 spline half shafts with the integral drive members, identical to the stock Disco 300 24 spline shafts, except 10 spline. The original Defender 10 spline halfshafts with separate drive members that I first used didn't work correctly, they were a tad too thick and I believe the PCD or Hole size is slightly, very slightly, different 'cos they were extremely hard to tighten and actually bent the heads of the bolts when tightened up!!

So get a set of RRC 10 spline half shafts with the integral drive members .. :)

You got a part number at all Paul? Think I'm gonna go down that route and keep the 10spline in the rear and ashcroft the front. Atleast when the the seals go in the arb it's easy to pull out. What did you have to do to your arb to fix it again?

FTC3186 And FTC 3187

Again? nothing really it didn't break .. ;)

Yeah, I got mine off ebay, £15 a pair .. the chap didn't know, just thought they weren't used any more!

I've got to go to Featherstone Road, Sutton Coldfield in the next couple of days which isn't a million miles away from this bloke....

They won't work well with a 300 axle. The 300 style half shafts have a land on them that suits an extra oil seal in the stub axle, to stop diff oil mixing with wheel bearing grease. FTC3186 and FTC3187 are the ones......

No worries .. too many very similar parts about ...

Those would fit but the oil seal would be redundant and the wheel bearing grease would soon wash out, so you'd have to rely on the oil from the diff running along the axle and shaft .. which isn't necessarily a bad thing if you know about it and increase the diff oil level ... BUT .. the wheel bearing seal is a grease seal, I believe, not oil and might not keep the hub assembly oil-tight. The cap also has a deeper flange and the bolts might not get full thread engagement, though it's only a thread or two so probably wouldn't really matter!

O ffs Paul theres loads of different types.... If I can't get any Rrc shafts I'll stick some 10 spline discos in minus the seal so the oil can lube the bearings like you've said. If and when I go back to 24 spline I'll put new seals in

picked a set up today for 30 quid, just need to find a swivel ball that isn't pitted to fook now to replace one on this 24 spline axle and ill do the wheel bearings and swivels when I fit it all together as well as drop the Ashcroft locker in the 24 spline diff in the front, shouldn't have to visit the front axle for a while after that
