First Lanes for the New Year

It's been over three years since I've had the Landy near a green lane. Over that time two and a half years were spent rebuilding her on to a new chassis and then recently rebuilding the engine. So, not a lot of time to get out and about. Joined GLASS back in June and so have started investigating lanes I didn't previously know about.
Storm Eleanor stopped me getting any further here.

Drove in to it and watched the depth out of the open side window, but got nowhere near the middle before it was over the side steps.
This was a lovely lane.

Easy driving, though the ridge down the middle was high.
This is the end of that lane.

Then we followed a lane up on to the moors to watch the sun go down.

Cheers, Paul. I'm really pleased with the way she looks. For what I paid the paint job is pretty good. The engine is settling down now too. She's pulling extremely well and getting better all the time. Not sure if that's the cold weather improving the old inter-cooler efficiency, or the engine getting better. Spring time will tell. It was a cracking afternoon.

Really, lots of lanes are still open in Wiltshire.. Just a few have TRO's and now a few VR's

I would hardly say ALL are closed down...

Can I ask you a daft question? One of the lanes I was going to drive had a field gate on to the road. Now I know the farmer would need to have a gate if he was going to keep livestock in the field at any time. However, I wasn't expecting the gate, so I decided to leave it. As a paid up member of GLASS I erred on the side of caution, not wanting to bring the organisation bad publicity until I checked protocol out. Is it common to have gates to open and close? One lane I was looking at on Trail Wise had a comment from a member that said 'The farmer has put a gate across the lane since I was last here, so I turned around'. Sorry, I could probably find the answer to this on the site.

As most round here link with the ridgeway these are closed. Can't be bothered to go onto the "plain" then spend 3 days washing the motor & then 2 days fixing it.
It was bad enough when I raced at tidworth.

Ask your local GLASS rep and / or check the councils website if it is any good. Hopefully will also show on trailwise.

ours closed lanes are marked with big signs & locked gates. When it's wet the tracks get cut up easy so every one understands.
Local council can help.. sometimes.

Not daft at all .. If the gate is shut but unlocked it should be OK to drive. If it's locked and there's a TRO sign then it's probably TRO'd. I'm surprised you only came across 1, we usually have to open and close loads, hence why so many of us carry a gate bitch (passenger!) Which lane? I'll have a check ..

Mind, I just realised you might be on about Scotland ... in which case, forget the above .. there are no green lanes as such in Scotland. Every road is potentially privately owned and as such you need permission from the owners to drive it, or something like that!

Cheers, Paul. The gate was just held with bailing twine. No TRO sign. I was just being cautious. Better to be safe and all that. I'll give it a go soon. No, not quite in Scotland, lane NT9802-01

Looks Ok to me, just that noone's reported anything on it. With Baling Twine I will always go through, but make sure it's secured after.

Going above and beyond there, mate. No need to contact local rep. I could do that if necessary. I'll try it again when I get the chance. I intend to get good use out of my GLASS membership.

Much appreciated, Paul. Great support. Will be interesting to see what he says. I think he is based towards Newcastle and uses lanes up the Tyne valley (West of Newcastle). Not so much up North, where I am. Could be wrong though Thanks again.

I've got the GLASS page and Trail Wise page permanently on tabs on my browser, I need to get a grip Seriously though, I want to start enjoying my Landy again.

I find using the ordnance survey app good. Upgrade so you can track progress & make GPX files so these can be sent to friends. Can sit at home (in the warm)check/plan route then use either bike/Landrover for confirmation of valid/legal marked route.

I'll look in to that. So you get the free, standard ordnance survey app and then upgrade so that you can record where you have been?

Yes. Upgrade to premium.is a bit expensive but cheaper than having lots of maps & then drawing all over them.
1 route I do 4 OS maps overlap so makes things easier having an iPad next to me while plotting.
