Crankshaft sensor spacer.

Ok I am about to replace the wiring to my crankshaft sensor on a TD5 and while I am at it change the sensor (NSC 100790).
I see that some TD5 vehicles have a sensor spacer (NSJ 000010) some have no spacer what determines the fitting of a spacer?

You sure? I havnt got a spacer fitted on my 90. Runs fine. The way I understood it was you fit the CPS if all works well then your good, if there are issues then you need the spacer?

I always fit the spacer and see if the engine runs. try driving it rather than let it idle. If you are having issues with starting and intermittent misfires when driving then remove the spacer as the sensor is too far from the flywheel to give stable readings. If you use cheap pattern sensors It is possible for the sensor to contact the flywheel without the spacer fitted.

I changed mine for a genuine unit about a year ago, still fine now, ,
never had a starting issue or misfires

Popped into my local main stealer and asked the question, "When do I fit a spacer to the crankshaft sensor"
Answer "When your TD5 is a manual gearbox"
Stuart the parts guru also looked at the build specification on my vin No and said "from new mine was fitted with a spacer"
Both the parts person and the technician agreed that ALL manual TD5's should have a spacer fitted to the base of the crankshaft sensor.

Don't want to hijack the thread but has anyone known one of these sensors pack up while the engine is running? started up my engine on Saturday morning and it ran for two or three minutes then it started to misfire and shake violently then packed up. can't get it to re start purged the fuel system checked things over with Nanocom but no go ordered a flywheel sensor and will try it when it arrives.

Yep. Mine died last year while entering a round about! Sputtered then dropped into limp home mode.

Oh so it kept on running after the sensor let go, mine coughed for a few seconds and shook violently then stopped so it might not be the flywheel sensor. If I turn the key it turns over coughs and blows out some dark grey smoke but just won't fire up.

Strange. Mine did run fine, for a time. Then died again, happened 3 times, new sensor no more problems!

I have just fitted a new CKP sensor (genuine LR) with spacer to a Defender 2001 TD5 with manual gearbox the engine would not start not even try to fire. Removed the spacer and it burst into life instantly, went for a drive and it runs well.
So wammers I think we need to add to your statement "spacer not fitted to automatic gearbox vehicles but the spacer is fitted to SOME manual gearbox vehicles".
I do not know how you discover if your manual gearbox vehicle needs a spacer other than doing what Shifty1962 said and this is what I did.

That's interesting, I changed the clutch recently on my Defender TD5 manual and I noticed it did not have a shim under the sensor. I'm having a bit of a battle with mine at the moment and i have ordered a new sensor hope that will cure it.
By the way anyone know how thick the shim is ? I want to try it with and without so I may try to make one from plastic.

That's interesting, I changed the clutch recently on my Defender TD5 manual and I noticed it did not have a shim under the sensor. I'm having a bit of a battle with mine at the moment and i have ordered a new sensor hope that will cure it.
By the way anyone know how thick the shim is ? I want to try it with and without so I may try to make one from plastic.

Thanks that's great, if it's not too cold I will try and measure up and customise one to give 1.5 mm clearance. If not I will try to make one at standard.

raywin I said 0.513mm just over half a millimetre aprox 20 thousands of an inch.
