Howdy folks,

Have a 03 110 TD5 commercial defender with 90,000 miles on it, it's not in bad nick just needs some TLC. The front driver side CV is clicking like mad and ready to crap at any moment so i need to sort this asap as well as the driver side swivel housing seals and bearings.

One thing that is really bugging the hell out of me is that when i put it into first and release the clutch there is a thud that comes from the back of the jeep, it does this changing into 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd albeit not to bad. It feels to me like the rear diff or something has serious play in it!!!! Possibily a mount???

I have been unable to have a look due to weather that last day or so but hoping to look quicker rather than later. Would anyone have any ideas as to what this maybe and what to look out for??? Hi / Lo 4WD is all working fine.

All ideas and suggestions appreciated.

possibly ball joint on rear A frame.

This is quite possibly the problem. When we got our 1986 90 there was significant thumps from the rear when starting off, and when driving slow with the clutch pedal partially in. We have since replaced all the suspension bushes including the bush on the ball joint and the large thumps have disappeared. There is still some slight clunkiness in the drive-train if you don't get the clutch control quite right, but we think that is because of slightly worn splines in the rear diff rather than the rear A frame ball joint.

Yup, I would put put money on it being the Aframe ball joint, not a lot, purely because I'm quite tight. I would check the prop when your down there as well. :)

Thank you very much guys, just looked out the window now and it's a clear morning so going to make hay while the sun shines as they say.

Right so will do, i need the jeep for another day or two before i can pull out bits and have her a non runner. Today i ended up doing a stub axel and cv joint in another car so the defender go put to one side!!!!

I have a long list for this Defender lets hope i get through it all as i have 2/3 other ongoing projects :)

Universal joints at each end of the propshaft......should be no play on them, a bit of rotational play in the prop is normal due to slack in the diff but should be no play anywhere on the UJ's or the sliding joint. Check for movement with wheels chocked and the handbrake off and in neutral.

Thank you very much for all the info Blue, really do appreciate it. Will post back once i have poked around hopefully tomorrow.
