Hi, I have just bought a series III land rover, with a series II gearbox and find it brilliant! However, the chap I purchased it off warned me about 'winding' up the gearbox by driving in four wheel drive ON the road? Anyway, today, by accident, I drove 8 miles to work and back in four wheel drive! Is this 'bad' for the gearbox? If so how do I 'unwind' the gearbox?

Thanks, but confused, ArthurD

you dont ,and it wont necessary hurt it,but since both axles are driven at same speed in low box or high 4wd ,when axles have to turn at different speeds (cornering)wind up occurs which will either come out through tyres slipping or eventually broken half shaft ,diff ,or gearbox etc ,it puts a strain on the system and doing it constantly would eventually break something ,but if you havent then just ensure you only use low or 4wd on soft ground,(low is 4wd at all times)

More modern 4x4s have a third diff in the gearbox which lets the front and rear wheels turn at different speeds so no "wind up" occurs on tarmac. On soft ground this has to be disabled so later landys have a "diff lock" to do this.

Hi, thanks - but once you have done 4 wheel drive on tarmac is there anything to 'unwind' now - the chap said about lifting the wheels to allow them to 'spin' ?
