hi got 2002 p38 diesel had problem with auto box so decided to convert to manual 5 speed took 3week to convert but I think I've done a cracking job only proble I've got is you have to rev the nuts of her to move but once moving brill question I've got is been told that the engine ecu auto is diferent to he manual ecu if so can get one off a 2001 manual but can it be reprogrammed to my becm Whitch I have just had converted to manual by calrova and he has done a brill job if it can be reprogrammed to a nother engine ecu is there any body in the Scarborough Bridlington area that can do it cheers

Change gearbox to r380 box. oil cooled radiator. transfer box ecu engine wring loom plus gearbox wiring had becm converted to manual but don't no about the engine ecu with it is different

Hmmm. Never compared manual and auto at that level. @wammers is the diesel guru.

Engine ECU is behind battery in that black box. If you get a manual ECU it will need the security code copying to the BECM with Nanocom or similar or it won't run.

Is the ECU different? Dunno. Could compare part numbers on autocat or Rimmer Bros website, I guess. Auto is 4 speed, manual 5 so it would make sense to me.

Because of the huge turbo lag with the M51, even the factory manual has to rev the nuts off it to get going. The auto box masks it somewhat.

You could get a power box that helps the turbo spool at lower RPM, but still about 1500 ripems to get full chooch.

Engine ECU is the same but the settings in the BECM need to be changed which you say you have done.
The M51 has no low end power, that's why the auto box is better. Manual is a PITA.

Engine ECUs manual and auto have different part numbers. Manuals do not have the gear change torque reduction function. There maybe also other subtle differences.

About 1750 before mine starts to pull. I find the manual livelier than the auto, although you do have to boot it a bit! Only real niggly thing about the manual is that gear 1 in high is a little too high on hill starts, especially when towing a heavy load so you end up giving the clutch some abuse. Maybe that's what kills the sprag clutch on the HP22 auto? Low range is great, with the spread just where you need it so presumably some sort of compromise was put in. Just a pity you cannot shift seamlessly from LOW to HIGH.

Maybe I stand corrected, but as the torque reduction is in response to a signal from the auto box transmission ECU, it will not happen if the auto box ECU is not there.

This is true Keith, but you would wonder why there are definite part number differences between manual and auto.

Hi thanks for the output this conversion is a full conversion gearbox r380 manual oil cooler (rad) gearbox auto wiring removed new manual transfer box wiring new engine wiring loom so gearbox can plug into it becm converted to manual by callrover excellent fellow very helpful Canot recommend them enough only thing that has not been changed is the engine Ecu car runs beautiful at normal running it is just the set off it is searching for gas even when you give it some so you have to give it high revs and then it slowly builds up but once it is running it’s fine all through the gears

You don't need to convert the BECM just select manual in the gearbox option in settings. And write it to the BECM. Anyone with a Nonocom can do that.

They are all gutless at low revs, many have commented on here that with a manual, pulling away at a roundabout for instance is like playing Russian Roulette. The torque converter on the auto masks the problem.
