110 Fuel Tank Bolts

I’ve dropped the fuel tank to do some chassis repairs and I’ll be needing to replace the two captive bolts that hold the rear of the tank/cradle up. Is this possible without major cut-and-shut surgery? Trying to plan ahead for tomorrow, couldn’t work it out today!

If you are referring to the ones on the rear crossmember I replaced them with standard bolts on mine and some large washers. Although a bit of a fiddle there is enough space to get a ring spanner onto them in the crossmember even for large ham fisted individuals like me! I think as standard they are not in the chassis but are a bolt welded to a square plate so should be easy enough to remove. Although I am referring to a tdi, the modern electrical models may be different with their fancy rust proof plastic tanks.

Cheers mate. Is it possible to extract the old bolt from above? I’ve got some of the “special” bolts on order as part of the fuel tank fixings kit. I couldn’t see how to do it! Mind you, I had had enough of it by then. Bloody rusty piece of **** !

I replaced my tank a while ago and got a full set of fittings, I don't remember having too many problems removing the old bits.
I do remember thinking that I might have struggled if I had used plain nuts and bolts rather than the proper captive parts.

They are bolts welded to a plate, just undo the nuts and they will come out ...



Thought I had a pic, but I just Tig'ed (well my mate did) two M8x25 bolts to a small square of stainless 1.5mm plate (so it wouldn't turn).
