as to any ecu, yes pretty much but best to use same version, pre and facelift ages, also same gearbox, but you can use the auto ecu in a manual but not the other way around.and yes it will need to be coded to the injectors and the bcu.

Was gonna say I'm guessing you know the reg of the old disco, it's only a few quid to get it checked, just do it yourself and see. Then if it comes back clear you also have a second harassment case you can open as well.
Have you checked the rear subframe, the mounting bolts corrode in the chassis rails, lift the back end up but not by the wheels etc so the subframe is hanging, then get a pry bar and check the mounting bolts for movement.
As to the chips, they are for sale on eBay.

Could be anything giving a fault, low fluid, electrical circuit problem, split pipe etc, do some searches, check the fluid level, plug into a textbook or nanocom if fluid is ok.
Programmable ecu's were fitted from 2002 onwards. You either have to buy a newer ecu which will be approx £200 upwards, then buy or get a map for the nano and then write it to the newer ecu. It is also better to get the same gear stick option as your current car.

I wouldn't bother. It costs about £50-£80 to get it done properly. If its snapped trying to undo it already then it won't come out by drilling and tapping it. Have a look on you tube at snapped glow plugs.

What's the insurance cost for your d1? Then wat will it be for a td5? I'm sure you have checked but that could have a deciding factor if not. I love my td5 I get 26mpg with egr blanked, dastek chip, dastek intercooler and no middle box with mixed driving. Are you certain you will get 45p a mile...

You can pick up a new pump for £280 ish. Fit yourselves.
Or try a used pump with warranty.
I would stick to the air suspension if a lot of towing but that's just my choice
