    Brake connectors again

The early classics used the imperial system - the master cylinder flange to the brake servo is vertical. Some time later in the 70s they swapped to a metric system. This is identified by the the master cylinder flange being horizontal. The imperial master cylinders became unavailable, so if you...

    Rrr

I can vouch for the South Wales group. They are mostly a little older than me but a great bunch and certainly very in to getting hands dirty, we even have a rear-cross-member-replacement expert ! I've been going for around a year and haven't heard any talk of polishing, cleaning or buffing, just...

Red inside the water system ?

Hi Fett, It was OK but a whole load of unecessary effort just to change a broken clutch pedal spring ! It's just rather unwieldy to get out due to the weight of the pedal box and brake servo (which is surprisingly heavy). Of course, the brake pipes wouldn't all undo, so that meant one had to be...

    Sill to rear wheel arch

    It's a 1973 2-door. Thanks others for the links, I'm sure they'll be a great help.

Advice: changing the thermostat + coolant this weekend...

Hi Mike, I have had trouble with this last weekend on my 1973 2-door with a 3.5l V8. I dropped the coolant to get the radiator recored but had problems refilling. The workshop manual says add 4.5litres of water to the rad then "add 6 litres of antifreeze and top up with water". Itr doesn't say...

    Sill to rear wheel arch

Hi there, I've replaced the N/S inner and outer sills. My question is how is the rear end of the sill supposed to be closed off. Someone has fabricated a lower rear wheel arch extension so this may be the fault. The sill doesn't quite reach the forward face of the wheel arch. Also, there is a...

Red inside the water system ?

You're right. I am just trying to protect the £140 I invested in getting my radiator recored. Don't want it to block up with crap or sludge. Plan to flush with the thermo out on Saturday. New thermo and gasket on its way from Rimmers. Tonight I will be mostly cleaning up that thermo housing...

Red inside the water system ?

Interesting Wammers thanks, I understand how the thermo works with the system. Hadn't realised that the water pump could 'mill' as you put it, not having taken one apart....yet. The water can still circulate through the heads and the heater matrix whilst the thermo is closed though, right ? How...

Red inside the water system ?

Good point but then the thermostat I had fitted didn't have a valve so how does that work ? Can you explain "mill" more please, sorry for being thick. Thought of using citric acid or similar but no knowing what it'll do to the radiator or the engine block afterwards. Am also wondering what...

Red inside the water system ?

Why an air bleed in a water system - to release trapped gas? I thought it was to allow a bit through the system when the thermostat is closed because the water pump is running all the time. Incidentally, does anyone have a 'circuit diagram' for the water system in the RR. I'd like to know where...

    SU carbs running real rough!!

Hi Eddyendo, I have SUs fitted and they started behaving like you mentioned: backfire / bog / die etc. Needed lots of choke to pull away smartly from a junction or accelerate, so they were obviously running lean. Turned out to be the throttle spindles letting air in, so mix goes lean on...

Red inside the water system ?

Thanks for all the replies guys, good to get the benefit of all that experience. Next question then is how can I flush the engine block and heater matrix core to clear all that red stuff out before it contaminates my new thermostat and recored radiator ? Going to flush with mains pressure cold...

Red inside the water system ?

Having just fitted my recored radiator, I thought I'd inspect the thermostat. It was jammed shut solid so will be replaced but I also noticed that the hoses and the insides of the thermostat housing and the thermostat itself are covered in a deep red / burgandy coloured deposit. It looks too...

    Brake Click

Maybe something to do with the brake servo getting a vacuum as you start the engine and allowing the pedal to move slightly ?

Can't get the coolant back in

Seriously though, respect for doing that. Building a plane is impressive stuff, scratchbuilding even more so. How does something like that get tested. Presume you can't do much else other than a fast taxi run and then take off and hope it handles well ? Awesome stuff. Well done.

Can't get the coolant back in

Hi Wammers, Impressed that you built that plane entirely from drawings. Must be very light but doesn't it go all wrinkly in the rain ? ;)

Can't get the coolant back in

Thanks Fett, The thing that concerns me is that I have done this drain and refill before, many years ago before the car was laid up for repairs and I don't recall having any trouble with getting all the coolant back in. I think I just poured it all in through the radiator filler. I didn't remove...
