That sounds about right. Triumph's did have dodgy exausts.

If you fit a snorkel and all the necessary breathers are fed into it there shouldnt be any reason (as long as its diesel) that the engine couldnt be completely submerged. As long as the driver dont drown that is.

Personally I would opt for a decent SII Disco with a V8. LPGd of course.I pulled a Hi Cap LDV van off a track on the mountain where I live with a SI Disco and could quite easily have forgoten that it was there. You could get a really decent one and still have a few quid left over.

If you are going to change the engine why not check out other lumps. A friend of mine has fitted a Prima out of a Maestro it now has a Turbo and intercooler. Top end is better, and fuel economy is good. There are loads of options.
