cheers clutchdust I finally sorted it after much probing and headscratching by removing battery connection for 30 secs and it has sorted itself out must have acted as some sort of reset maybe

Tried wire from battery to solenoid car starts ok tested solenoid wire at starter nowt there

Just replaced battery now car will not start (300tdi).I have checked battery volts ok at 12.2 soleniod not clicking Think it may have something to do with alarm as it beeped when batt. was disconnected.
