yep, they certainly can, the trick is drive them like your an icelandic hill climbing pro and gun it....... get to the end then check for damage,,,, ive always suffered from the same things which is breaking rear diff mounts but this is due to the lazyness of me never fitting a decent guard...

much easier to do the head gasket on it than the 2.0td i can assure you........ the main thing is if you have a knackered head gasket, u may also have a cracked head, especially if its overheated.... may be worth the risk, if anything u can strip it and sell for spares!

will do andy, already thought that as made that mistake with an old e30 (bmw) i had.... if ive buggered the valves ill take the head off then check for the likely piston damage, i found a breakers in gloucester with a few engines on the shelf for 400 quid so may grab one then strip my engine...
