No - it was the connectors on the back of the switch - I changed the clutch master cylinder over the weekend and must have made the connection insecure - nipped them up with pliers and refitted them - spot on info chaps !! Cheers Westy

To safely test if a viscous coupling is working put some tape around one of the fan blades and stick the other end to something solid that will stop the fan spinning then start up the van.
