I’m back
not sure if my fans working properly i never had a problem with the temp on my 90 even after 3 hrs of off roading it always stayed in the middle of the guage or would go down to under a quater(i assume thats when the fan kicks in?) but after an encounter with a large bomb hole water section where the water came upto the windscreen and got our feet wet it seems to now creep up to about 3/4 and will only come down a bit if you put the heater on full whack, have i knackerd it? or how do i tell if the fan is working properly if atall?..ta rich
 
with the engine hot there should be resistance if yer try to turn the fan by hand..................after yer turned the injun back orf of course
 
yer dunt need the fan anyway - take it orf and bin it.
I aint got one on mine and nevva had a problerm, even in traffic on a hot day.

the rad on deependers is fookin huge - keeps it plenty cool enough.
remember, a doozel runs more efficiently the hotter it is (within reason).
my temp gauge sits between 5/8 and 3/4, depending on road speed and ambient temp - perfick.
 
A good way to check if the viscous bit is working is to stick your fingers into the fan when the engines cold with the engine running. If the fan stops the viscous bits ok. If you have difficulty picking your sarnie up later in the day the viscous bit is fooked an so is yer hand.

so how do yer check its acturlay working when its hot?

and still be able to pick up yer sarnie next day
 
My TD ran at less than a third on the temp scale, never saw it beyond that.
 
What sort of state was the water you drove through?
Its more likely that the rad is half blocked.
 
To safely test if a viscous coupling is working put some tape around one of the fan blades and stick the other end to something solid that will stop the fan spinning then start up the van. Once the engine gets hot enough to require the fan to work, if the coupling is woring it will snap the tape easy as pie - so long as you dont go banzai on the tape job !! Just a couple of strips to stop it spinning when its cold

Why not just stop the engine when it's hot and see how easy it is to turn the fan by hand.
 
they usually still turn because of the drag inherant in them but not with the same ommph! and certainly not using as much power as when its hot.
