I used a three legged puller to remove the tripode from the shaft. You risk killing it and needing a new front propshaft if you try using a hammer to knock it off.

My 2001 V6 (Auto) consistently returns 23 mpg around town and on longer trips on trunk roads and motorways manages 28-29 mpg with one or two passengers and generally light loads.
I had the same problem and managed to fix mine in less than 30 minutes at no cost. Sounds crude I know, but you'll need to borrow the iron from the missus to do this. This video shows you how.
